For many, Van Gogh is a legend—the man who defines our modern myths about artists. Van Gogh, however, was neither a mad genius nor a starving, misunderstood artist. So much has been said about Van Gogh's turbulent life, that his major place in the development of modern art has been overshadowed. Van Gogh was a deeply spiritual man who pursued a clear artistic goal. Van Gogh's paintings were images of great emotional intensity based on his careful artistic study of color and composition. Van Gogh's art belonged to the avant-garde of his time. He was not a popular artist during his lifetime. But Van Gogh had the support of a great many friends, artists and critics. By the end of his short career, his paintings were exhibited in major group shows in Paris and Brussels. In a career spanning only a decade, Vincent Van Gogh painted great work after great work. Whether painting a portrait, a landscape or a still life, Van Gogh sought to capture the vibrant spirit of his subject. After a youth full of false starts and disappointments, Van Gogh's decision to become an artist was unconditional. He preferred to go hungry in The Hague to producing "saleable watercolours" before he was ready. Van Gogh was prepared to try everything honestly, but his refusal to compromise triumphed in the end. |
